Every year, a luncheon is held where Evansville and the Tri-State join the national observation to celebrate local women and commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th amendment of the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The observance not only celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment, but also focuses light on women’s continuing efforts toward full equality. The observation includes the selection on an Albion Fellows Bacon Award winner, in the tradition of progressive reformer Bacon, who demonstrates exemplary dedication through active engagement in reform efforts or influence of public policies that improve the quality of life for our citizens. The celebration includes recognition of a local non-profit working to help our community. Rabbi Sandy Sasso, Rabbi Emerita of congregation Beth-El Zedeck of Indianapolis, who is also the author of nationally acclaimed children’s books, is the keynote speaker for the 16th annual Women’s Equality Day luncheon.
